Meet Emma, Inspiring Digital Artist

Framed digital art

This post is a collaboration among Emma, her friends, and their teacher, Renee Vaiano. The drawings are by the amazing Emma.

Emma is a sixth grade student from Garden City, New York. Emma has always enjoyed expressing herself through creating art, specifically digital art. Emma was recently introduced to Shapegrams in her STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) class. When asked about how she makes such creative artwork using the Shapegrams format, she said, “I love playing around with all of the different shapes and colors to create something completely new.”

Emma’s most recent inspiration comes from themes in her everyday life. She loves holidays, especially Chinese new year. Covid really changed everything for Emma. “Usually there is a parade in Chinatown for Chinese New Year, and my family has their own lion dance group that performs in the parade. There’s confetti and poppers that people throw at the parade to celebrate.”

This year, Emma wasn’t able to attend the parade because of Covid. This didn’t stop her from celebrating in her own unique way. Emma created a drawing in honor of Chinese New Year and her family’s traditional lion dance performance in the parade. “This dance represents scaring away the evil spirits for the new year.” Her depiction will have to keep away the evil spirits until next year when her family can return to the parade safely and celebrate once again.

Emma’s Shapegrams designs are now being used as a super challenge in her STEAM classroom for other students to replicate. Her ability to create these works of art on a digital platform is truly unique and inspiring to her teachers and peers.

  1. Wow! wow! wow! Emma! These drawings are so amazing! I am blown away by your creativity. Each one of the drawings are so different and complex, but the colors and composition are so nicely balanced and has so much depth. My favorite is the coy fish, it has so many layers and colors, but everything on the page is laid out perfectly. You are so talented! I hope you continue to create beautiful drawings.

I liked how I could identify with the holiday spirit depicted in the images and I LOVED the planets and the “road” that ran through the frame, it made it feel multi-dimensional; and I also had a lot of fun imagining the different possibilities of energy flow through those “tubes”. Thanks for taking me on your little trip, it was really enjoyable. So good to see you blossom in this creative and beautiful way!
